Oklahoma 6A Cross Country Final Rankings 2022: Edmond North’s Boys Deliver, Owasso’s Girls Defy
The final 2022 6A poll, posted September 25th, called the boys’ race and whiffed the girls’ — a familiar split for anyone who’s been reading this space. Edmond North’s boys were No. 1 and won state with 66 points. Deer Creek’s girls were No. 1. The champions were Owasso, with 72 points, from the No. 3 slot. Two years in a row, the 6A girls’ poll has now picked the wrong winner. At some point it stops being a miss and starts being a trend.
Credit where it’s due: the boys’ poll was a beauty. Edmond North No. 1, Mustang No. 2, Deer Creek No. 3, Owasso No. 4, Edmond Memorial No. 5 — and Edmond North went out and won it with 66. Wire to wire. The voters saw the best team in September and the best team in November was the same one. That’s the job, done right.
The girls’ side is where the poll earns its criticism. Final order: Deer Creek, Edmond North, Owasso, Jenks, Edmond Memorial. State meet: Owasso 72, champions. Deer Creek — the poll’s No. 1 — didn’t even make the top two. Seventy-two points is a decisive win, not a tiebreak squeaker. The voters didn’t just pick the wrong team; they picked a team that wasn’t particularly close to right.
And the individual wrinkle: the 6A boys’ individual title went to Stillwater’s Keegan Thomas — Stillwater sat at No. 13 in the team poll. Thirteenth. The fastest kid in the biggest class in Oklahoma ran for a team the voters barely noticed. The poll measures programs; the individual race measures people. Never the twain shall meet, apparently.
Behind the top five boys: Broken Arrow, Jenks, Westmoore, Moore, Choctaw. Girls: Yukon, Moore, Norman North, Edmond Santa Fe, Union.
2022 6A, then: the boys’ poll was prophecy, the girls’ poll was fiction, and the fastest kid in the class came from nowhere the voters were looking. The record book keeps all three truths without blinking.
